Every Grain Is Real: What the Sand Teaches

Every Grain Is Real: What the Sand Teaches is a memoir in forty-four chapters by Charles E. Chumley, a retired corporate executive and stand-up comedian who started building sandcastles and never quite stopped. Organized across two beaches, Playa del Carmen, Mexico and Gulf Shores, Alabama, the book follows Chuck through stubborn mornings, flow states, and the quiet lessons that accumulate when you show up before anyone else arrives. Each chapter closes with a Bucket Wisdom: a distillation of what the morning had to teach, short enough to carry in a pocket. Funny, honest, and grounded in the physical world of sand and tide, Every Grain Is Real is a book about daily practice, the people who show up alongside you, and what gets built when no one is watching. All author royalties are donated to Family Promise, which helps families experiencing homelessness.

What Readers Are Saying

Every Grain Is Real is one of those rare books that sneaks up on you. What begins as the story of a man who builds extraordinary sandcastles quietly becomes a masterclass in how to live. Chuck Chumley writes about failure, discipline, attention, and generosity with a precision and warmth that I found genuinely transformative. I laughed out loud. I took notes. I aspired to be better. It would be hard to ask for more from a book.”

Russ Powell, Leadership Trainer and Coach, Musician and Juggler, San Francisco Bay Area, California

“Sand sculptures, just as life, are not made to last forever. That makes them more valuable, not less. Enjoy it while you can and appreciate it when it's gone.”

Janel Hawkins, Owner, Sand Castle University, Gulf Shores, Alabama

“If life is about learning as you go, then the author of Every Grain Is Real has certainly been proactively searching and sharply observant for answers. A memoir written with honesty and about those he loves and those who loved him enough to notice his journey.”

Teri Sloop, Teacher, Charleston, South Carolina

“Life has hit me hard, and I know I am here today only by the grace and mercy of God. You do not know how positively this book has affected my life. God bless you and your family always.”

Abdias Aguilar Aguilar, Chiapas, Mexico (translated from Spanish)

“Chuck builds sandcastles on beautiful beaches and empowers people with his words and thoughts. He is one of the most genuine and inspirational people you could ever meet. This is an inspiring read, and the book beautifully shows that life's greatest lessons are learned one grain at a time. The story reminds readers that personal growth is built through patience, resilience, and the small experiences that shape us over time.”
